Young talents are close to Dürr Technik's heart and so we support students at Aachen University of Applied Sciences in their participation in the IMechE Railway Challenge. This competition is organized annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The participants have to design and manufacture a miniature railway locomotive with 10¼ inch gauge according to strict rules and a detailed technical specification. The locomotives will be tested live during the competition weekend at the Stapleford Miniature Railway in Leicestershire. Several winner categories and one overall winner of the Railway Challenge will be chosen. The individual competitions reflect relevant topics in rail vehicle technology such as:
- Low noise emissions
- High driving comfort
- Energy recovery and storage
- High acceleration
- Automatic target braking
After a ninth and a fourth place in the previous years, it was quickly clear for the students in the team that the FH Aachen 2019 would again participate in the IMechE Railway Challenge.
For this, Dürr Technik provided the students with an oil-free compressor unit D-030 from the KK8 series for installation in their locomotives.
And at their third participation the FH Aachen and Reuschling actually managed the overall victory as well as three victories in individual classifications. The success was achieved with a new body and intensive test runs - the students lovingly named the new locomotive "Molly" after „Emma's“ little sister.
Congratulations on this masterpiece!
With its wide oil-free compressor portfolio, Dürr Technik offers oil-free and low-noise compressors not only for MOLLY but also for real locomotives. In addition to auxiliary air compressors, Dürr Technik also produces main air compressors up to 1200 l / min at 9 bar.
