D-030 - probably the quietest, smallest and most lightweight main air compressor for rail traffic

(c) IMechE / David Shirres

With 61 dB (A), 209x108x156 mm (LxWxH) and just 4.4 kg, the oil-free compressor D-030 from Dürr Technik delivers a fabulous 8 l / min at 5 bar. That's not enough for a Vectron (Siemens) or TRAXX (Bombardier) locomotive, but for EMMA.

In order to attract qualified young talent to the railway industry, the Institutional Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) annually organizes a student competition. The University of Applied Sciences Aachen enables its students to participate as a team across all disciplines.

The entry in the competition is called EMMA, an electric locomotive powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. All subsystems of the locomotive are designed, developed and improved by the students. Dürr Technik provided the students with an oil-free compressor unit D-030 from the KK8 series. The supervising professor Dr. Raphael Pfaff is convinced of the unit: "Among other things, noise emissions are assessed within the framework of the Railway Challenge. The used D-030 could be installed without further housing directly in the locomotive EMMA. Also, the compressor could be operated even during the noise evaluation in its normal regime. The noise level was so low that other teams jealously asked if it was actually working."

We are pleased about this feedback and we wish lots of success in the next competition and a good result.

With its wide oil-free compressor portfolio, Dürr Technik offers oil-free and low-noise compressors not only for EMMA but also for "real" locomotives. In addition to auxiliary air compressors, Dürr Technik   produces main air compressors up to 1200 l / min at 9 bar.

Digital transformation at Dürr Technik: Dürr Technik is facing up to digital change in the field of materials management. The comprehensive restructuring of materials management ensures, among other things, process reliability, faster and more economical processing as well as secure traceability.

We have opted for an integrated material management system with digital networking from Kardex, a leading Swiss supplier of warehouse systems. The old large parts warehouse was replaced by a new one. Now we are tackling the storage of small parts. Here, small parts are stored in Kardex shuttles and the picking processes are controlled digitally. In this process, the system produces a traceability label for each part, for example. This means that every product can be assigned 100% and individual identification is possible.

Materials management 4.0 also has a lot to do with real-time: data processing should run almost simultaneously with the corresponding processes in reality. As a result, materials management will in future "press" the material into production instead of waiting for it to be "requested". Everyone will benefit!
